How data is sourced and labeled
Every number on Indiedex says where it came from. We would rather show “not disclosed” than a guess.
Revenue labels
- Verified
Pulled directly from the payment provider through a read-only connection.
Not live yet. When it ships it will use read-only access to Stripe and similar providers. No listing can show this badge today, and moderators cannot assign it by hand.
- Public source
Stated publicly by the company or founder. We link the source and its date.
A moderator recorded the figure from the company's own page, filing, or the founder's own post or interview. The link and the date of the statement are always shown. Older statements are not refreshed automatically.
- Founder reported
Entered by the founder on this site. Not independently verified.
- Estimate
An editorial estimate. Treat it as a rough guess, never as reported revenue.
Revenue metrics
- MRR
- Monthly recurring revenue
- Revenue (30d)
- Total revenue in the last 30 days, including one-time sales
- ARR
- Annual recurring revenue
- Lifetime revenue
- Cumulative revenue to date
- Revenue (12m)
- Revenue for a fiscal year or the trailing 12 months
The leaderboard selects one definition at a time: MRR, 30-day revenue, ARR, or 12-month revenue. We never convert one into the other, and one-time or lifetime revenue is never ranked as recurring revenue.
Business breakdowns & opportunity research
Research notes distinguish documented facts, company or founder claims, public observations and hypotheses. Each note includes its source, known publication date and last review. Notes older than 90 days are marked for re-review. Missing research is labeled unknown; a source does not prove a cause of growth.
Opportunity Radar compares the same App Store chart on the latest stored date shared by two countries. It selects top-25 apps in one sampled market that were not seen in the other. Chart absence does not prove an empty market, unmet demand, store availability or commercial success. No opportunity score is calculated.
Inspect the comparison method →Where listings come from
- Founder submissions, reviewed by a moderator before they go live.
- Curated listings built from public statements by the company or founder, each cited.
- Show HN launches from the public Hacker News API, with the post's points and comments.
- YC launches (Launch HN posts) from the same API, tagged with the company's YC batch from its post title.
- New GitHub projects from the GitHub API, with stars at the time of import.
- App Store charts from Apple's public top-chart feeds for 45 countries, captured daily, enriched with ratings and screenshots from the iTunes Lookup API.
We don't scrape or republish other directories' datasets. Imported listings are marked as unclaimed until their maker claims them, and any listing can be corrected or removed on request.
Paid placement
Rankings, leaderboards and editor's picks are never for sale. If we ever sell sponsorships they will be labeled “Sponsored” and kept out of ranked lists.
Games & fair launches
Source-discovered games are reviewed separately from community submissions. Only eligible community launches can compete; real votes determine organic rankings. Outbound referrals are never called plays. Read the public game source, eligibility, ranking and anti-abuse rules.
Something wrong?
Use “Dispute figure” or “Report listing” on any page. Founders can create an account and claim their listing to correct it directly.
Social content & platform coverage
Trends brings together Google Trending Now search-volume buckets in eight tested countries, trending-tag aggregates seen by mastodon.social, and recent uploads from 18 selected official YouTube channel feeds. These signals measure different things and have no combined popularity score. Mixed discoveries alternates signal types; latest and video-view sorts are separate. Video views are total public observations, not views earned during the selected window, measured growth or income. Country is supplied for Google searches; channel feeds and Mastodon do not supply audience location. Search and community records expire after 24 hours without refresh; video metadata expires after 29 days. Topics are editorial tags and keyword matches. Instagram and Facebook require authorized Meta access; paid X and Reddit access is deferred. Google-indexed social research links are external searches, not native social analytics. Regional YouTube API charts remain a separate integration. See the About this data page linked from Trends for source definitions and refresh details.
